The first ever One Day International (ODI) cricket match was played on January 5, 1971, between Australia and England. The match took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in Australia.

Originally, the teams were scheduled to play a Test match, but it was abandoned after the first three days due to heavy rain. As a result, officials decided to play a one-day, 40-over-per-side match (with 8 balls per over) to entertain the crowd.

Australia won the match by 5 wickets, with England scoring 190 runs, and Australia successfully chasing the target with 191/5.

This match marked the birth of the ODI format, which has since grown to become one of the most popular formats in international cricket.
